Our Pastor Emeritus: Reverend Dr. Ronald E. Jones
Rev. Dr. Ronald E. Jones, a dedicated, committed servant of God, is the thirteenth senior pastor of the historic New Hope Baptist Church, the oldest African American Church in Dallas, Texas organized in 1873 by African Americans. Rev. Jones served as Interim Pastor on four different occasions and in many other capacities at New Hope prior to being elected as the senior pastor. His background as associate pastor, professional Christian counselor, certified temperament counselor, certified mediator, experienced negotiator, and parliamentarian, along with over thirty one years in executive management, enables him to maximize his skills and talents for Christian service. In addition, he has served as “advisor’ to several churches in their pastoral search.
Rev. Dr Ronald Jones is a native of Dallas, TX and graduated from James Madison High School in 1962. He earned his Baccalaureate Degree from Dallas Baptist University, a Master of Science Degree in Human Relations and Business Management from Abilene Christian University, and a Doctorate Degree in Clinical Christian Counseling from Cornerstone University.
Dr. Jones was elected as Mayor of the City of Garland in 2007. He subsequently served three terms as the Mayor of the City of Garland which is the 11th largest city in Texas and 86th largest city in the nation with a population of over 228,000. Mayor Jones was the Assistant City Manager for the City of Garland for five and one-half years of the 29 years that he served in city government. He had cumulative oversight of over 14 departments during his tenure at the City and managed millions of dollars. After his retirement in May 2005, he served as management Consultant to the City Manager and helped set up a Relief center for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Dr. Jones also served as parliamentarian to the Mayor and City Council. He is a graduate of the first Leadership Garland Class. He also served as an adjunct professor of business for 10 years at El Centro College in Dallas.
As a servant leader, Rev. Dr. Ronald Jones is involved in many Christian and civic organizations which include: and life member of PTA and NAACP; National Christian Counselors Association, National Association of Parliamentarians; Kiwanis Club of Garland; Garland Chamber of Commerce; Garland Summer Musicals; Garland Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association, Garland Asian American Task Force; Garland Area Hispanic Affairs Association and Garland Landmark Society; While Mayor of Garland, he served on the Regional Transportation Council Board; North Texas Commission Board of Directors; U.S. Conference of Mayors Transportation Committee and International Affairs Committee; UTD Institute of Public Affairs Advisory Council; Metroplex Mayors (past president); Economic Development Steering Committee; and Luna Elementary School Campus Improvement Team;
Some of his most recent honors and awards include: inductee in the Elite News Ministers Hall of Fame; South Dallas Business and Professional Women’s Trailblazer Award; Maurine Bailey Community Service Award; Man of the Year for the Texas Public Power association; and the Dallas Baptist University Distinguished Alumni Award in 2011. In 2013, he received the Garland Chamber of Commerce Tall Texan Award. Dr. Jones was the recipient of the Award for Excellence in Community Service presented by the Dallas Historical Society in 2015. Dr. Jones is in demand as a speaker, trainer, mediator, parliamentarian, and he is also a gifted artist.
Dr. Jones is a devoted husband of 53 years to his lovely wife Dr. Peggy R. Jones. He is an honorable father of two sons. The eldest son Ronald E. Jones II (Martha) is an attorney and the youngest son is retired NFL Player, Daryl Jones (Kamica) who played for the Giants, Bears, and Vikings. Daryl currently serves as the Pastor of the Rock Fellowship Church in Miami, Florida, and he is working on his doctorate degree at Southwestern Theological Seminary. Mayor Jones and Peggy have seven adorable granddaughters and 3 grandsons.
After serving the New Hope Baptist Church as Senior Pastor for nearly 12 years, Reverend Dr. Jones is headed towards a well deserved rest. and plans to remain active in the community, civic organizations and the church, retiring on April 18, 2019.
